Transitioning to the Home Office
Leaving the traditional office behind in lieu of a home office is exciting. The day is opening up, and you'll have so much more flexibility in regard to your work and your lifestyle. Making this sort of transition is certainly worthy of excitement, but before you move, you should do some careful planning.

Set Up A Work Space
Your home office doesn't have to be an actual office or a study, but it should be a place where you can store your paperwork and other items without fear of them being disturbed. This likely means the family computer isn't going to be suitable for your office. If your children are playing around with your files, you'll be in dire straights should something get deleted.

At the very least, set up a portable office that can be removed from the common area. This might be an external hard drive with client files, a cart of office supplies and back-up files stored someplace safe. This way, you can plug in your hard drive and work while the children are away, and then unplug it and put it safely in the closet during the evenings.

Creating a routine and blocking out other tasks during that time ensures you are able to get your work done, and that you'll have time every day for fun without work hanging over your head.

At the office, everyone is working around you. At home, the television is calling and you keep stumbling across interesting websites to read. If you find you're not very productive when you're not working around others who are, you'll need to find methods to help your productivity along. This might be something as simple as getting dressed for "work" every day.

Some people find that working in pajamas keeps them from doing their best. Or your might set up routines for each task you do every day to keep you on track. Turning off the phone and shutting the door on outside distractions, such as the television, can also help. Close extra windows and programs on your computer and make yourself unavailable on instant messengers while you're working on a project. Find what works for you to keep you in a work mindset- even when you'd rather be doing anything else. This might even include a short break to take care of those nagging chores, but keep it short and get right back to work before you fall out of your zone.
